What is a chalcogenide?

Compounds containing a chalcogen element; those found in group 6 of the periodic table, excluding oxides, are commonly termed chalcogenides. Typically, chalcogenides contain one or more of sulphur, selenium and tellurium in addition to other elements. They also referred to as " chalcophile" (from Greek sulphur-loving) for elements that frequently bond to sulphur.

Samples of GLS glass

As a glass, chalcogenides have many important characteristics, but most crucially a transmission range which extends to wavelengths far beyond the range of silica and other glasses.
